Biography

Lida Hatrick started painting in her teens, in her native Bohemia. In 1969 she married a Scottish doctor, came to live in Berwickshire and concentrated on bringing up her children who became the frequent subjects of her paintings and sculptures. In 1999 she retired early from her teaching career to study art at the Leith School of Art. She now paints full time.

Inspired by the Lammermuir Hills and the Merse she works intuitively and energetically, aiming to achieve a true, but not literal representation of the landscape. Eroded surfaces, dykes, paths, patterns of heather burning on the moor often form the underlying structure in her work.

Joining a Contemporary group of artists based in Leith School of Art has introduced new themes and techniques resulting in a new body of work.

Most recently she has been studying classical Chinese paintings and the ink and watercolour techniques.
